After visiting the Holy Island, home to the Lindisfarne Priory in Northumbria, England, I saw a place that has been important in our human history since AD 600. Cut off from the mainland by twice-daily high tides, this small island was discovered, sacked, rebuilt, sacked, and retooled. Laiden with treasures of Christian artifacts, one of which was the Lindisfarne Gospels, the presence of the remains of St. Cuthbert, and elaborate architectural enshrinement, Lindisfarne embodies remote grandeur attracting hostile attention.
Ruins still stand, and the natural beauty of the island prevails as an archeological treasure and a sanctuary for many avian and marine species.
Those little dogs running the border of this painting, are found in the illuminated manuscript of the Gospels and they express the virtue of “doggedness” -- a trait having true value.
